I’ve mentioned before how in early Oshi no Ko manga volumes and anime episodes, it seems to focus on Aqua and his development, and it’s only around volume 9 that we Ruby starts to steal the show. The 10th volume builds on that in a way that’s honestly a little terrifying. We see the full extent of her plans from the previous volume to now and the effects of those actions, as well as her brother’s response, and it shows exactly how brilliant, devious, and powerful she can be.

Editor’s Note: There will be minor spoilers for the first few three chapters of the 10th volume of the Oshi no Ko manga below. 4wb5v

Things start out with a new episode of the show Dig Deep, which features Aqua as a host and Ruby as a reporter, dealing with the cosplay incident and flaming of the show from the previous volume. Because of the director Tetsu Urushibara’s decisions, a cosplayer was treated abominably, people who were supposed to be on the show had no warning about changes, and approval wasn’t gotten from Abiko Samejima for Tokyo Blade usage. However, while that all went wrong and people’s reputations were hurt and livelihoods threatened, we start with Ruby about to benefit. She orchestrated the proposal for handling it on the show, with her hosting the “interviews” to explain how it all went wrong.

From the outset, it seems like a fantastic way to make amends. The director apologizes. The show explains how it happens. The wronged cosplayer who sicced her thousands of followers on the show and started the hate campaign gets a chance to speak up. Abiko is able to talk about her project and why she’s protective. It seems like everything went right and Ruby gets some attention in the process.

But we see that Aqua understood what Ruby orchestrated, and he brings up up after the episode recording in Oshi no Ko. He can tell she had a hand, but asks when she started it all. It’s then that, like a James Bond villain, we see exactly how brilliant she is. She realized she didn’t want to wait for the assistant director Shun Yoshizumi to climb the ranks so she could get more work. So she used the flaws she observed in Dig Deep, formulated a plan to ruin the direct, pulled in a cosplayer known for leaks and unleashing a toxic community, and put everything together to force a situation where the already established director Urushibara owes her. She forces her way up the ladder quickly, rather than the more gradual and slow way Aqua did. He looks more and more shocked as she explains, and we get this greater sense of appreciation of how observant she was, how she watched people, the decisions she made, and how she ensured she had the cosplayer, director, assistant director, and audience all on her side by the end.

The thing it comes down to is collateral damage. When Aqua schemed in Oshi no Ko, it felt like it ended up being more targeted endeavors. During the Love for Real incident with Akane, he convinces people to work together for a good cause. When he’s taking part in the Tokyo Blade stage play, it’s to reach one specific person and get information from people tied to a certain group. His climb through the ranks of the entertainment industry isn’t about his personal gain, really. It’s about getting clues and insight to find Ai’s killer. His climb doesn’t tear anyone down and, while he does get Akane on his side along the way, the relationship he builds don’t seem to involve exploitation.

With Ruby, she’s more ruthless once she decides she learned what happened to Gorou Amamiya and sets her sights on advancing as quickly as possible. She’s willing to manufacture situations to play people to her advantage. Yes, in this instance she does “fix” things in the end. But the only person who is better off at the end is herself. Also, in so doing, it gives the impression she’s somewhat alienating herself from others. While Aqua did detach from Kana, which he established is a purposeful action to ensure what happened to Ai never happens to her and protects her, he also didn’t set things up to benefit. Ruby is cunning, enraged, and determined enough to do that.

In a way, I think only now getting to see Ruby in this way in Oshi no Ko, especially after Aqua did much of his scheming in early volumes, makes for a more interesting comparison. It makes the lengths she went to and the way she behaved as a mastermind more impressive and terrifying than it might have been otherwise. Likewise, seeing Aqua’s response to the realization that Ruby is willing to go so far is a major moment.

Oshi no Ko volume 10 debuts on May 27, 2025, and Yen Press will release volume 11 of the manga on August 26, 2025. The anime is on Hidive.

Ruby Starts Scheming in Oshi no Ko Manga Volume 9

While Ruby and Aqua are twins in Oshi no Ko, it can really feel like he gets more attention sometimes. After all, many of the early volumes in the manga are showing things from his perspective or highlighting his plots. However, things start to shift in the eighth volume after a trip brings up past-life memories. That means in volume 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga, Ruby is the focal point. Not even the new B-Komachi, but this rising star herself. And I absolutely love it.

Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for volumes 8 and 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga below. 4x603c

So to understand the setup for volume 9 of Oshi no Ko, you need to think back to what happened in volume 8. Ruby’s been relishing her new life as an idol, even though she is of course still morning her mother Ai’s death. Aqua’s been the one focused on revenge, as we’ve always seen him more aware of his past life. In previous volume, she actually happened upon the body of Dr. Gorou Amamiya. That was the doctor visiting her that she had a crush on in her past life. (Who was reincarnated as Aqua, which she doesn’t know.) Due to this discovery, Ruby learns that Gorou was murdered by the same two people who killed Ai.

This kicks off something inside her. Ruby channels that in her performance with the B-Komachi song “POP IN 2.” It takes off and gets 20 million views. Her, Mem-cho, and Kana are hustling to take advantage of that boost to retain momentum. In the past, we really saw Aqua diving in and chasing every opportunity. Now, we’re seeing her check in with Ichigo Saitou for advance and assistance strategizing. She’s getting herself on the same variety show as Aqua. She’s cultivating a more ditzy persona, while also cozying up to people who will have influence or connections.

We know Aqua is smart in Oshi no Ko. We see it. But until volume 9, we’ve really only seen Ruby as a ionate and driven young woman who is willing to go over the top for her dreams. Now, her intelligence is on full display. She’s showing a type of cunning and sense of street smarts that shows she is Aqua’s equal in her own way.

What I also appreciate about Oshi no Ko volume 9 is while this installment of the manga is focusing more on Ruby than ever before, it still also shows a quick update on Aqua. Which I feel is important, given the revelations during the Tokyo Blade arc. He was finally able to start to let things go and live for himself a bit. However, we’re seeing here that while he made some breakthroughs, the trauma he went through as a child when he watched his mother Ai die isn’t going to just disappear. So it’s an appreciated insight to have those moments too.

Ruby is such an important part of the story in Oshi no Ko, and we’ve tended to see her as a ing cast member or more innocent young woman pursuing her dreams until volumes 8 and 9 of the manga. But now she’s doing her own research, plotting, and strategically positioning herself. It’s a wonderful reminder that she shouldn’t be underestimated.

Volume 9 of the Oshi no Ko manga is available now, and volume 10 will debut on May 27, 2025.

oshi no ko season 3

Doga Kobo released a new trailer for season 3 of Oshi no Ko, which will start airing in 2026. The new trailer focuses on Ruby and is about 30 seconds long.

You can watch the new trailer for Oshi no Ko season 3 on the official Oshi no Ko YouTube :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRiwe0FGzJU

The trailer only features Ruby and Aqua, though Aqua is standing with his back facing the audience. Ruby is holding onto a script for the Dig Deep! One Chance! variety show, which Aqua and Ruby will as regulars.

Comments for the teaser are mostly positive, such as one praising the key visual’s focus on the Hoshino twins to remind the audience that this is a story about revenge, and not just the idol industry. However, a lot of comments are also hoping that Doga Kobo will give the series an original ending, rather than using the one in the source material. When the manga ended in November 2024, many netizens voiced their complaints about how Akasaka closed the saga. Though some anime series may go their own route if a manga hasn’t finished by the time production wraps up, it’s unlikely for a studio to create their own ending when the mangaka already wrote one for his manga.

Oshi no Ko is readily available on streaming services like Hulu, and season 3 will start airing in 2026.

Oshi no Ko puzzle game coming to smartphones or mobile devices

Shueisha has announced via the Oshi no Ko anime X that there will be a new puzzle game based on the same franchise coming to smartphones in Japan. The company has also set up a new X dedicated to the mobile game.

Details about the new mobile puzzle game are still very scarce as of the initial reveal. Shueisha has not even announced the game's full title yet. The company only noted that the game is still under development, and it will gradually publish more information in the near future.

Oshi no Ko originated as a manga launched in Shueisha's Jump magazines in 2020, which has also concluded around the end of 2024. The franchise made a major breakthrough with an anime adaptation that launched in 2023, with its third season also in the works as of early 2025. While there is also a growing number of adaptations based on the title, such as a live-action series, the newly announced mobile puzzle game will be the first-ever game adaptation dedicated to the franchise.

Prior to this announcement, Oshi no Ko only appeared via crossover DLC and events in other existing games. Some of the examples included Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis in September 2023 and The Idolmaster: Shiny Colors in July 2023 and August 2024. Bandai Namco also released an Oshi no Ko-themed DLC pack for Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival in November 2024, and the latter is still purchasable as of February 2025.

The official Oshi no Ko puzzle game will be available on smartphones in Japan. Shueisha will announce more details about the mobile game, including its full title and release window, at a later time.

Oshi no Ko is one of the best anime and manga series in recent memory, but what about the live action series? Well, I watched the entire series from start to finish to let everyone know. The Oshi no Ko live action series isn’t actually bad at all; just decent. However, this series is very much made, specifically, for existing manga and anime fans.

The main issue behind this Japanese TV series is the format of it. It has eight episodes in total in its first and only season, adapting a large portion of the manga in a handful of episodes. Though these eight episodes are more than double the length of a normal anime episode, it does so much in so little time.

Image via Prime Video

Without spoiling too much, the only existing season of this series adapts both seasons of the anime within eight episodes and even goes beyond that point in the manga. There are entire episodes that adapt a single arc, while others are done in a couple of episodes. This is such a swift pace that anyone new to the series will likely be left behind pretty easily.

The series just doesn’t take enough time for some plot points to resonate. Some of my favorite scenes only last for a minute at best. For instance, there is the fight between Akane and Arima during the Tokyo Blade production. This part almost needs 10-20 minutes to really dive into their argument and the backstories between them. However, it is done in a few seconds.

This unbelievably fast pace does lead to some positives. For one, it is a great way to recap the series for existing fans. In addition, some of the twists and turns have surprising emotional impact since they come out of nowhere at times. But if you are new, this is not the place to start.

Another concerning aspect of the Oshi no Ko live action series is what it changes. Some of this is intentional and interesting, but others are downright problematic. I won’t spoil the premise for newcomers, but it revolves around a pregnant teen idol. The manga and anime start with this twist and shows the idol Ai giving birth and all that.

Oshi no Ko live action series Prime Video

However, this live action adaptation skips straight to Ai’s twin children as toddlers. Worse still, it doesn’t properly address Ai’s doctor and that situation until the end. This is even though this is the very beginning of the series. It is an intriguing change I like. But if you aren’t familiar with the storyline, it is confusing and unnecessary.

Then there are the changes to the Tokyo Blade story arc. In the original series, this is a stage play. This live action series was an excellent chance to make a real-life stage play episode. However, that isn’t the case. Not only is there not enough footage of Tokyo Blade itself, but it is a TV series rather than a stage play now. This is by far the most controversial change for me, which made this already somewhat boring arc even worse.

There is also a key missing character, which I dare not spoil here. But the return to Miyazaki Prefecture doesn’t see the introduction of a certain person there. Overall, the Oshi no Ko live action series will be quite confusing for newcomers to the franchise. It is a shame because the production value and most of the actors are excellent; just look at Ai’s opening performance scene and you’ll see. Nagisa Saito as Ruby is particularly impressive and she only gets better as the series goes on.

Unfortunately, though, the Oshi no Ko live action series is made in a way where it only works for existing fans. Whether you miss the manga or are waiting for the anime to come back, this is a great way to recap the series. It moves so fast that it doesn’t waste your time and it adapts the series well to live action. However, if you are new, it is best to read the manga or watch the two seasons of the anime first before checking this out.

The Oshi no Ko live action series is available on Prime Video.

Past Lives Finally Resurface Oshi no Ko Volume 8 5s3l23 https://siliconera.cinevost.com/past-lives-finally-resurface-oshi-no-ko-volume-8/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=past-lives-finally-resurface-oshi-no-ko-volume-8 https://siliconera.cinevost.com/past-lives-finally-resurface-oshi-no-ko-volume-8/#respond <![CDATA[Jenni Lada]]> Sun, 24 Nov 2024 17:00:00 +0000 <![CDATA[Anime]]> <![CDATA[Featured]]> <![CDATA[Europe]]> <![CDATA[Japan]]> <![CDATA[Manga]]> <![CDATA[North America]]> <![CDATA[Oshi no Ko]]> <![CDATA[Playtests]]> <![CDATA[Yen Press]]> https://siliconera.cinevost.com/?p=1064981 <![CDATA[

Reincarnation again becomes the main topic in Oshi no Ko volume 8, as the manga finally gets back into characters' past lives.

A lot’s happened over the last few volumes of the Oshi no Ko manga. In volume 6, the focus was on character development during the Tokyo Blade stage play. When we read through volume 7, we got Aqua come to with his trama and the possibility that he doesn’t need to live for revenge. Sometimes transitions between arcs in series can feel fuzzy, but this is very clear cut. Which is exciting, because now in volume 8 of Oshi no Ko the manga’s focus finally shifts back to Ruby and both Ruby and Aqua’s past lives.

Editor’s Note: There will be some mild spoilers for Oshi no Ko, particularly volume 8 of the manga and Ruby and Aqua’s past lives, below. a3v71

Okay, so this shouldn’t be a spoiler by now. But in Oshi no Ko, both Ruby and Aqua are reincarnated characters who knew each other in their past lives. Before becoming Ai’s children, they knew each other in the town of Miyazaki. Ruby was a young woman named Sarina Tendouji, who was dying of cancer. Aqua was Dr. Gorou Amamiya, an obstetrician who was there for Ai when pregnant, but also was caring for Sarina since her parents weren’t present. They both died at about the same time, with Sarina’s being due to her illness and Gorou’s due to someone with malevolent intentions tied to Ai.

The thing is, that element sort of fell off a bit as the focus turned to their new lives as siblings Aqua and Ruby. The two both knew they were reincarnated individuals. They also both knew they had a connection to and love for Ai. They didn’t know their sibling was actually the person they knew in their past life. But after volume 1, that seemed to be it. Yes, Aqua’s past identity is helping to drive his pursuit of revenge for Ai’s murder. But we didn’t learn anymore about Gorou.

So getting to return to both of these characters via flashbacks and references to these past lives in Oshi no Ko volume 8 is such a welcome opportunity. Because now that the new B-Komachi is going to Miyazaki to record a video, both Aqua and Ruby are thinking about what once was. In the case of Aqua, he’s trying to find out if anyone realized what happened when Gorou was killed. With Ruby, she’s also searching for Gorou while reminiscing about how much her doctor meant to her. There are some fantastic resolutions for both of them in this, and it especially means some new growth and opportunities for us to see Ruby as something other than a constantly happy and eternal optimist.

I also love how there’s a hint of something else in Oshi no Ko volume 8. There’s a touch of the supernatural here. Again, I’m not going to spoil such major revelations. However, given the circumstances behind Sarina and Gorou’s deaths, and the fact they both happened to reincarnate as Ai’s children and siblings, it’s always felt like something is going on. With this volume, there’s an additional hint of there being something more after everyone’s arrival and Miyazaki, and I can’t wait to see how that plays out.

Basically, I’m glad Oshi no Ko is coming back to the past lives of Ruby and Aqua with volume 8 of the manga. There’s so much unexplored potential there. Unanswered questions too! It feels like now that the Tokyo Blade arc is over, we’ll finally get to see more from Ruby and additional insights into the characters and what’s going on again.

Oshi no Ko volume 8 is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 9 of the manga on February 18, 2025. The anime is streaming on HIDIVE. Season 3 is in development.

oshi no ko ending

In an interview from Shueisha, mangaka Aka Akasaka stated that he planned the ending for Oshi no Ko from the start of serialization. Unfortunately, fans have not been too happy about how the hit manga series ended.

Akasaka stated that while he had thought of the ending for Oshi no Ko when he started drawing it, he also “allowed” for the characters to breathe. He stated that his experience on Love Is War changed him. Instead of planning out everything, he occasionally changed the story to incorporate new subplots or make certain characters more important. Mem-cho, for example, was supposed to be far less important than she ended up being.

Akasaka considers these unexpected changes part of the character’s personality, and he wanted to become an author who could love and appreciate that. So while he decided on how Oshi no Ko would end, he wanted to draw the manga as a series that treats the characters well. Writers may be familiar with this sensation of a story or characters seemingly taking on a life of their own.

There are many reasons as to why online reactions to the Oshi no Ko ending has been largely negative. Some have stated that it feels rushed and that a lot of plot threads were just abandoned. This second criticism might stem from Akasaka sticking to a planned ending after pantsing character-driven subplots. Others have stated that the ending doesn’t seem congruent with established themes and characterizations, especially revolving around Ruby.

Now that he’s done with Oshi no Ko, Akasaka plans on taking a brief break and focusing on his life. He mentioned that he wants to work on a farm for a bit. His new manga will be a fantasy manga in Weekly Young Jump and it’ll start serialization in Spring 2025.

oshi no ko end

In four more chapters, the Oshi no Ko manga will end. The last chapter will be on November 14, 2024 and it’ll be in the 150th issue of Weekly Young Jump.

From Issue #147, which will come out on October 24, 2024, Oshi no Ko will come out every week until the end. The final volume of the series, Volume 16, will come out on December 18, 2024 as well. To commemorate this, there will be a campaign to celebrate the end of the series. This campaign includes a special edition of Volume 16, which will come with a book stand, a sticker, and an alternate cover. There will also be an eternal Ai fan keyholder for sale, which will resemble the one in the series itself. Finally, there will be a weekly countdown via the official X (formerly known as Twitter) for the manga. There may be more to come in this campaign, so more details may appear in the future.

Oshi no Ko is a highly popular anime and manga series written by Aka Akasaka, whose previous series Kaguya-sama: Love Is War was also very popular. The story follows twins Aqua and Ruby Hoshino, who are actually reincarnations of a doctor and his patient. They were reborn as the children of their favorite idol Ai Hoshino. After a crazy fan murders Ai, the two of them enter the entertainment industry for their own reasons.

We Get to See Aqua Grow in Oshi no Ko Manga Volume 7

Even though Oshi no Ko is about the twins Aqua and Ruby, a lot of the early volumes of the manga focus on him instead of her. It’s understandable, since he’s penned as the primary protagonist for a while early on. However, with volume 7 of Oshi no Ko we get to see this shift as certain developments give some of Aqua’s story a sense of resolution and Ruby an opportunity to step into the spotlight again.

Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for volume 7 of the Oshi no Ko manga below. 54281l

Volume 7 of Oshi no Ko begins with the Tokyo Blade stage play we’ve seen coming together over the course of multiple chapters finally running. This is a huge pay-off in many ways. For one, we’re finally seeing the culmination of the rivalry between Akane and Kana. It’s also giving a troubled production a chance to come together, and seeing things actually turn out better than expected is a relief.

But more importantly, this is a big deal for Aqua and his character arc in Oshi no Ko. We’d already seen leading up to this point that a part of him just won’t let this quest to avenge Ai die. It’s negatively affecting his daily life, with an inner voice that seems like it could also be his past identity chastising him for even considering moving on. So at the climax of this novel, we’re seeing him do what he fears most. He actually acts again. He uses emotional acting after such a long time of running, and in so doing he makes a major breakthrough about himself.

The way this is handled in the Oshi no Ko manga is stunning, with Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari shifting between the personal revelation and Aqua’s performance. We can see how his tapping into those memories influences his behavior on-stage. Likewise, the insights he’s gaining as he does so offers this reveal into what he’s dealing with and allows him to perhaps address the issue in a way that could make his life different going forward.

This, followed by a meaningful conversation with Toshiro Kindaichi and Taiki Himekawa, really makes Oshi no Ko volume 7 feel like it’s constantly giving the reader valuable insights into the characters. We’re finally learning more about Aqua. We’re seeing him grow. We watch as he learns more about his past.

At the same time, Akasaka and Yokoyari do a great job of pivoting to the next part of the Oshi no Ko plot at the end of volume 7. Following the performance of Tokyo Blade, we see that Ruby was in the audience the whole time. She noticed how far everyone, Aqua and Kana included, have come as she watched the show. With that seed planted, the end of the volume takes the opportunity to shift the focus back to her and new B-Komachi. Seeing the group start to make some decisions, as well as a choice to return to her former roots, paves the way for growth on her part as well.

Oshi no Ko volume 7 really feels like one of the more important volumes of the manga, in part because of the development it offers for Aqua. We see him embrace his pain and deal with the trauma he’s experienced for years. We watch the stage play finally come together. We see people like Kana and Akane stand out. Most importantly, we also witness a fantastic transition that shifts the story back to Ruby. It’s all handled incredibly well.

Oshi no Ko volume 7 will be available on August 27, 2024, and Yen Press will release volume 8 of the manga on November 19, 2024. The anime is streaming on HIDIVE
